How Is Rolfing Performed?
Rolfing is usually performed in a ten session series. Rolfing sessions last about an hour. Each session builds upon the previous session with a different focus and set of goals, adapted to the client’s unique needs. Changes are felt in the body as a result of each session. One of the enjoyments of Rolfing is noticing these changes. By the tenth session, a new pattern of sitting, standing, breathing, and moving has been created.
Ten Session Series Example
- Upper body session: release breathing pattern restrictions, lift thorax from pelvis, and balance pelvis
- Lower leg session: create base of support and improve transmission of weight
- Sides of body session: release restriction of twelfth rib, differentiate leg/pelvis and thorax/shoulder girdle
- Inner leg and pelvic floor session: differentiate legs from pelvic floor and create body core support
- Mid thorax session: extend support to mid thorax, balance muscles front to back
- Back of body session: free sacrum while working from plantar fascia of feet to cranium
- Cranial session: position head, ensuring proper and balanced support from neck and body
- Structural session: prepare body for further integration by addressing relationship between parts and whole, work either upper or lower body
- Structural session: address remaining structural relationships, ensure movement and consciousness of movement in previously stuck spots
- Integration session: establish lines of balance in all directions and bring awareness to fascial relationships
